Pirates Activate Ivan Nova; Option Nick Kingham to Indianapolis

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated Ivan Nova off of the 10-day disabled list so he can make the start today against the Chicago Cubs. To make room on the 25-man roster, Nick Kingham has been optioned to Indianapolis.

Nova was pitching with a sprained right ring finger until he went on the disabled list after his May 24th start when he allowed four earned runs over 5.1 innings against the Cincinnati Reds. On the season, he has a 4.96 ERA in 61.2 innings, though he had a 3.32 ERA in April and a 7.61 ERA in May.

Kingham will return to Indianapolis for now and be the first option if the Pirates need a starting pitcher. He had a 3.82 ERA in six starts, with 35 strikeouts and an 0.99 WHIP in 35.1 innings.

UPDATE: Pirates haven’t decided on Cervelli yet, who left yesterday’s game with a jaw injury.
