Prospect Watch: Brandon Waddell and Will Craig Lead Altoona to Victory

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Colin Moran, Edgar Santana, Kyle Crick, Max Moroff and Dovydas Neverauskas), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our 2018 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis lost 10-7 to Durham.

Tyler Eppler, who was three days removed from an inning of relief work, made his first start in 14 days. It did not go well for him, as he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits a walk and a hit batter in 4.1 innings. Eppler had four strikeouts and a 7:2 GO/AO ratio, while throwing 55 of 89 pitches for strikes. His ERA went from 2.27 to 3.60 in this game. Dovydas Neverauskas retired all five batters he faced, three by strikeout. Johnny Hellweg had his season-long scoreless streak snapped at 14 innings.

The offense was led by solo homers from Jordan Luplow and Eric Wood in the fourth inning. It was the fifth for Luplow and fourth for Wood. Christopher Bostick had a single, double, walk and drove in two runs. He has 12 doubles on the season. Jacob Stallings had two singles and an RBI. Erich Weiss had a single, double and walk. Pablo Reyes and Wyatt Mathisen each had RBI hits in the six-run fourth inning. Kevin Newman had a nine-game hit streak snapped.

Altoona won 6-3 over Portland.

Brandon Waddell was used in relief in his last outing and it didn’t go well. He was pitching after Nick Kingham made his lone start for Altoona and Waddell ran his pitch count up high in just three innings. Back in his familiar role on Saturday night, he threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits and three walks, while striking out eight batters. He lowered his ERA to 1.66 through 48.2 innings and he has 41 strikeouts.

Logan Sendelbach allowed three runs in 1.2 innings before Jesus Liranzo came in a shut things down four his fourth save.

Will Craig had an RBI single to start the scoring in the sixth, then drove in a pair of runs with another single in the seventh. Stephen Alemais broke out of a slump with three hits, including his fourth double. He was 3-for-41 in the month of May before this game. Ke’Bryan Hayes had an RBI single, while Cole Tucker “drove” in a run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. Jason Martin has a ten-game hit streak after going 1-for-3 with a walk.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
