Pirates Add Sean Rodriguez to Roster; Option Max Moroff to Indianapolis

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates added Sean Rodriguez to the active roster in time for Sunday’s game. Infielder Max Moroff was optioned to Indianapolis to make room.

Rodriguez, who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves yesterday, was hitting .162/.326/.351 in 15 games before the trade. He had shoulder surgery prior to the season and was expected to miss the entire year, but made an incredible recovery to return in mid-July. He played 11 rehab games in the minors over four levels and hit .077/.191/.103, so it appears he is still getting up to speed in the majors after missing so much time. Rodriguez has played five positions during his return, getting time at SS/2B/3B/RF/LF.

Moroff could use the next 3 1/2 weeks before rosters expand on September 1st to get some regular at-bats. He has been up in the majors since June 2nd and has just 62 plate appearances over that time. The last time he started on back-to-back days was over a month ago. When the Pirates called him up from Indianapolis, he was the International League leader with a .954 OPS.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
