Stephen Tarpley Named SAL Pitcher of the Week

Published:

The South Atlantic League named West Virginia Power pitcher Stephen Tarpley, the Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on August 16th. He pitched once during the week, but it was a brilliant performance. On Saturday, Tarpley threw eight shutout innings, allowing three singles and no walks. He also recorded 16 ground ball outs.

Tarpley has made 16 starts this season, posting a 2.14 ERA, which would lead the league if he wasn’t just an inning or so short of having enough to qualify. In 92.2 innings, he has 87 strikeouts, a 1.10 WHIP, a 232 BAA and a 1.53 GO/AO ratio. The 22-year-old lefty has allowed two earned runs or less in 14 of his 16 starts.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
