Pirates Activate Antonio Bastardo, Option Bobby LaFromboise

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated left-hander Antonio Bastardo from the Paternity List, and have optioned Bobby LaFromboise to Indianapolis. This is the reverse of the same move from a few days ago, when Bastardo was placed on the list and LaFromboise was called up to take his place.

Honestly, there isn’t much to say here, except for the fact that Bastardo has been disappointing this year, and the hope is that he improves going forward to pitch like he did with the Phillies.

In other news, Charlie Leesman was placed on the Indianapolis DL, backdated to May 13th. Ryan Palencer reported that Leesman had tightness behind his shoulder.

  • It would be interesting to hear an explanation of exactly is Bastardo doing worse now than when he was with the Phillies.

    • I don’t know the “why”, but his walks are slightly up, and his line drive rate is way up.

      • I thought the same about the walks at first, but he’s actually walking less (10.8% vs 12.6%) and striking out less (24.3% vs 29.9%).

But wow, good spot on the line drive rate. That’ll explain running a .500 BABIP.

        • Usually I start with K/9, BB/9, and GB%, along with the usual regression stats like BABIP, HR/FB, and strand. I saw the LD rate when I looked to see how his GB% compared to previous years. It definitely explains the high BABIP, since the BABIP on line drives is the highest of the three options.

Although I don’t know if this is a small sample size, or a bigger problem.

        • Hitters hitting line drives is never a short term problem, it’s a red flag. Bad command, not crisp breaking pitches, flat fastballs. None of that is good or easily fixable most of the time

  • Tim – Morton is coming up in the next week or two at the most. Any chance Bastardo gets DFA-ed? What do you think happens when Worley goes to the pen?
