Minor League Schedule: Buddy Borden and Orlando Castro Try to Build on Great Outings

Four games on the schedule today, including a morning start time in West Virginia. Last week, Buddy Borden and Orlando Castro started on the same day and they matched zeroes for six straight innings. Castro retired 18 straight batters, while Borden finished with six no-hit innings. Both pitch today, with Borden in West Virginia getting that morning start. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Probable starter:  Brandon Cumpton (3-1, 1.41)
Yesterday’s Result: Gwinnett 4, Indianapolis 3 in 10 innings (game one) Indianapolis 4, Gwinnett 3 (game two)

Brandon Cumpton will make his sixth start for Indianapolis. He has also made two starts for the Pirates. With Indianapolis, he has thrown a total of 32 innings, allowing 29 hits, one homer and eight walks. Cumpton has 15 strikeouts, a 1.64 GO/AO ratio and a .248 BAA. In his last start, he went six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and four walks. All five of Cumpton’s starts qualify as quality starts.

AA: Altoona (17-25) vs Akron (28-15) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (3-2, 2.32)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 4, Akron 3

Adrian Sampson will make his ninth start of the season tonight. He has pitched 42.2 innings, allowing 37 hits, two homers and 13 walks. He has 33 strikeouts, a 1.12 GO/AO ratio and a .236 BAA. In his last start, Sampson pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. Prior to that outing, he faced Akron(today’s opponent) three straight times and allowed seven runs(six earned) over 12.2 innings.

High-A: Bradenton (20-24) vs Daytona (15-25) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Orlando Castro (2-2, 3.35)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 5, Dunedin 4 in 10 innings

Orlando Castro will make his eighth start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. In his last outing, the 22-year-old lefty retired the first 18 batters he faced. He ended up allowing one hit and one walk in the seventh inning before being pulled. Castro has thrown a total of 43 innings, giving up 37 hits, two homers and seven walks. He has 29 strikeouts, a 1.60 GO/AO ratio and a .237 BAA. In four home starts, he has a .185 BAA.

Low-A: West Virginia (14-30) vs Delmarva (23-20) 10:30am
Probable starter: Buddy Borden  (0-2, 2.23)
Yesterday’s Result: Delmarva 6, West Virginia 2

Buddy Borden will make his ninth start of the season tonight. He has pitched 36.1 innings, allowing 23 hits, one homer and 16 walks. He has 34 strikeouts, an 0.90 GO/AO ratio and a .176 BAA. In his last start, Borden threw six no-hit innings, giving up four walks and he struck out a season-high seven batters. Each of his last four starts were made on the road. At home this year, he has not allowed an earned run in 9.2 innings.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
