Minor League Schedule: Robby Rowland Goes on Slow Day in Minors

It’s a slow day on the minor league schedule today, with only four of the eight affiliates playing. The GCL Pirates and both DSL affiliates were off yesterday. AAA: Indianapolis (70-54) vs Columbus (59-64) 7:05pm 8/13

Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 6, Toledo 5

Indianapolis has off today. They are in first place in their division, ten games ahead of both Columbus and Louisville. Indianapolis has 20 games left this season, with four games remaining against each second place team.

AA: Altoona (55-64) vs Portland (57-62) 7:00pm 8/13

Altoona has off today. They will resume play on Tuesday at home, taking on Portland in a three game series. Altoona has two doubleheaders scheduled over the next week. They play two in Erie on Saturday, then two at home against Reading next Monday.

High-A: Bradenton (45-68 overall, 19-26 2nd half) @ Charlotte (54-57) 6:30pm

Robby Rowland will make his 21st start of the season tonight. He has also pitched twice in relief. Rowland has thrown a total of 104 innings, allowing 108 hits, ten homers and 43 walks. He has 55 strikeouts, a 1.33 GO/AO ratio and a .269 BAA. In his last start, he picked up the win by going six innings, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks, striking out six batters. In his last nine starts combined, he had 18 strikeouts. On the road this year, he is 2-4, 5.47 in 12 games.

Low-A: West Virginia (69-50 overall, 32-17 2nd half) vs Greensboro (54-62) 7:05pm 8/13

West Virginia has off today. They are in first place for the second half title with a 2.5 game lead over Hagerstown. They could also make the playoffs if Hagerstown wins the division, because the Suns were the first half champions. The Power would have to finish second overall for that to happen. Hickory is currently 2.5 games behind West Virginia in the overall standings.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (32-20) @ Batavia (26-23) 7:05pm 8/14

Jamestown is on their All-Star break. They are sending seven players to the All-Star game. Jamestown has the best record in the NYPL and they have a two game lead in their division over the Pirates old affiliate, State College.

Probable Starter: Jon Sandfort (2-1, 4.94)
Yesterday’s Result: Pirates were off yesterday

Jon Sandfort will make his seventh start of the season. He has also pitched once in relief. On the year, he has thrown 23.2 innings, allowing 23 hits, three homers and seven walks. Sandfort has 23 strikeouts, a 2.07 GO/AO ratio and a .256 BAA. He had three scoreless outings in his first four games, but his last three haven’t gone so well. Sandfort has allowed 11 runs on 14 hits over 7.2 innings in those last three outings.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
