Game Notes: The Pirates2 won for the 13th time in a row, improving their record to 43-23, with four days left in the season. They have a 1.5 game lead in the wildcard standings and they are now two games back of the Cubs in the division after sweeping the two game series between the two clubs. Over the next four days, they will play six games, with two doubleheaders scheduled to finish a pair of games suspended by rain. Starter Eduardo Vera went three scoreless innings, then he was followed by two shutout frames from Remy De Aza and Jesus Paredes finished the last four innings for the win, keeping the shutout intact. The Pirates didn’t get on the board until the sixth inning when they scored on a two run triple from Gustavo Barrios and then they plated a third run on a sacrifice fly from Yoel Gonzalez. Michael de la Cruz broke an 0-for-23 slump with a single today, though he did strike out in his other three AB’s.
Stats Of The Day
With the season about the end and the Pirates2 team fighting for a playoff spot, I thought I would take a look at how they fared against the two teams left on their schedule. They will play three games against the Rojos starting on Wednesday. On Friday, they will play three games against the Orioles2 over the final two days of the regular season.
VS Rojos
The two teams split the first two meetings, with the Pirates2 winning big in the opener by a 13-3 score, only to lose a tough 7-6 game the next day
In the second meeting, the Pirstes2 won both games by 5-1 and 9-2 scores.
Third time they again won big, taking the games 10-4 and 7-1.
In the fourth match up, the Pirates2 won 9-1 and the other game was suspended due to rain. The suspended game will be finished during this fifth and final meeting. That game is currently tied 1-1 in the top of the tenth inning. The Pirates2 will be batting with two outs and a runner on third base when the game resumes.
So right now they are 6-1 on the season against the Rojos
VS Orioles2
In the first encounter this season, the Pirates2 dropped both games to the Orioles2. It was the opening series of the season and the Pirates2 started the year with four straight losses.
In the second meeting, the Pirates2 dropped the opener before finally winning a game.
Third time they met up, they again split the series.
In the fourth match up, the Pirates2 took both games, winning 1-0 and 8-3.
Last time they played each other, Pirates2 won the opener 3-2 and the second game was suspended. The suspended game was stopped in the fifth inning with no score. That game will be finished either Friday or Saturday.
So the Pirates2 are 5-4 so far in the season series, but they are 12 games better in the standings, so they should have the advantage coming into the final three games.
