Game Notes: Kris Johnson was our Pitcher of the Month for the month of June, combining for a 1.65 ERA in 32.2 innings. In his last five starts he has gone 6+ innings each time, while going seven innings in the last three. He has allowed two or fewer runs in four of the last five starts, and has a combined 24:5 K/BB ratio in 33 innings. Vic Black pitched on back to back days for the first time since coming off the disabled list, which is a good sign. Black has given up no earned runs on three hits in six innings since coming back, with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Game Notes: Gregory Polanco hit his second homer of the year for Altoona in the third inning. Alex Dickerson followed that up with his ninth homer of the year. Coming into this game, Polanco had a .317 average and an .823 OPS in 63 at-bats in Altoona. Dickerson was on fire in the month of June, with a .917 OPS. He’s now 6-for-16 with a double and a homer in the month of July. Mel Rojas was on a hot streak before his injury put him out for a few weeks. Since returning he is 5-for-12 with two doubles and three walks.

Game Notes: Adrian Sampson was hurt by the long ball tonight. He gave up three homers, which led to all six of his runs. One of those homers was against top prospect Byron Buxton. Stetson Allie has really struggled so far with the strikeouts. He struck out four times tonight, and has 23 strikeouts in 51 at-bats so far in Bradenton. Taylor Lewis hit his seventh double and his seventh triple of the year.

Game Notes: Clay Holmes has struggled with his control for most of the year, but he has seriously cut down on the walks in the last few starts. In his last six starts he has walked 14 batters in 27.1 innings (4.6 BB/9). That’s after walking 37 batters in his first 50 innings (6.7 BB/9). He’s still got some control problems, but he’s starting to trend in the right direction. He’s also giving up fewer runs and hits lately. Max Moroff had a .936 OPS in the month of June, and is 5-for-15 to start the month of July.

Game Notes: Jon Sandfort pitched four shutout innings, striking out six. The only base runner he allowed came on a hit batter. In his two appearances this year he has combined for seven shutout innings, allowing two hits, no walks, and striking out nine. I’ve seen both of Sandfort’s outings this year, and have a write up of how he is coming along here. Reese McGuire went 1-for-2 with an infield single and a walk. He also stole second base and threw out a runner stealing. Ulises Montilla picked up three hits, and now has a .289 average and a .929 OPS in 38 at-bats.
