Minor League Schedule: Taillon Headlines Busy Saturday

Jameson Taillon leads the way today as the Pirates affiliates will play a total of nine games. This group of probables has an amazing amount of groundball pitchers, with Taillon’s 1.32 GO/AO ratio being the lowest ratio of the group. Prior to the start of their regularly scheduled game, Indianapolis will finish a game from earlier in the week that was suspended with the score tied at four in the 13th inning. Bradenton was rained out last night. They will play a doubleheader today consisting of two seven inning games. Jameson Taillon has the fourth best ERA in the Eastern League

AAA: Indianapolis (60-35) vs Columbus (43-52) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Brandon Cumpton (4-5, 3.69)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 1, Louisville 0

Brandon Cumpton will get his 13th start for Indianapolis tonight. He has also made three starts for the Pirates, two for Altoona and pitched once in relief for Indy. For Indianapolis, he has thrown 75.2 innings, allowing 73 hits, four homers and 27 walks. He has 58 strikeouts, an amazing 3.11 GO/AO ratio and a .258 BAA. In his last start, which was against Columbus, he went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.

AA: Altoona (41-50) @ Akron (44-48) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Jameson Taillon (3-6, 2.94)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 3, Akron 1

Jameson Taillon will make his 17th start of the season tonight. He also pitched once in relief, the completion of a suspended game. He has pitched 95 innings this year, allowing 90 hits, seven homers, 33 walks and he has 91 strikeouts. Taillon has a 1.32 GO/AO ratio and a .244 BAA. He picked up the loss in his last start, despite an impressive outings. In seven innings, he gave up two runs on five hits, no walks and he struck out six batters. He faced Akron on the road three weeks ago, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks in seven innings.

High-A: Bradenton (32-56 overall, 6-14 2nd half) @ Tampa (36-49) 5:00pm DH
Probable starter: Robby Rowland (3-6, 4.61) and Joely Rodriguez (0-3, 2.42)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton was rained out

Robby Rowland will make his 16th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched twice in relief. On the year, he has thrown 80 innings, allowing 79 hits, seven homers and 33 walks. He has 39 strikeouts, a 1.41 GO/AO ratio and a .262 BAA. In his last game, which came in relief, he threw six innings, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks. He has not struck out more than four batters in any of his last ten appearances. Rowland faced Tampa on 5/21, allowing five runs(four earned) in five innings. Joely Rodriguez will likely start game two. He has pitched four times for Bradenton and 14 times for West Virginia. Between the two stops, he has thrown 95 innings, allowing 100 hits, five homers and 26 walks. He has 66 strikeouts, a 2.08 GO/AO ratio and a .275 BAA. In his last start, Rodriguez gave up one run on a solo homer, going seven innings with six hits allowed.

Low-A: West Virginia (48-42 overall, 11-9 2nd half) @ Asheville (48-40) 6:05pm
Probable starter: John Kuchno (3-4, 5.10)
Yesterday’s Result: Asheville 3, West Virginia 0

John Kuchno will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched twice in relief. On the year, he has thrown 72.1 innings, allowing 84 hits, five homers and 30 walks. He has 51 strikeouts, a 2.16 GO/AO ratio and a .297 BAA. Kuchno had a rough start last time out, giving up five runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings. It was his second straight appearance against Hagerstown. The previous start, he allowed three runs over five innings. On the road this year, he is 0-3, 3.97 in seven starts.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (16-9) @ Lowell (14-9) 5:05pm
Probable Starter: Isaac Sanchez (1-0, 3.50)
Yesterday’s Result: Hudson Valley 2, Jamestown 1

Isaac Sanchez will make his fifth start of the season tonight. He has pitched five times this year, though his last outing came under odd circumstances. He pitched the completion of a suspended game that he originally started back on June 27th. Sanchez has thrown a total of 18 innings this season, allowing 19 hits, one homer and seven walks. He has 15 strikeouts, a 2.89 GO/AO ratio and a .275 BAA. Left-handed batters are just 2-for-20 against him this season.

Rookie:  GCL Pirates (9-8) vs GCL Phillies (4-12) 10:00am
Probable Starter:  Adrian Grullon (0-0, 2.38)
Yesterday’s Result: Pirates 6, Phillies 4

Adrian Grullon is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season this morning. He has pitched a total of 11.1 innings, allowing six hits, three walks and he has 12 strikeouts. Grullon gave up one run on three hits over four innings in his last start. He threw four shutout innings in his debut, striking out seven batters. He has a 2.67 GO/AO ratio. Second round draft pick Blake Taylor was originally scheduled to throw today, but may not due to the rain out earlier in the week. If he does pitch, it will be his pro debut.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
