Minor League Schedule: Dickson Tries To Follow Up Stellar Performance

There are four lefties among the probables today, including 2013 4th round draft pick Cody Dickson, who threw five no-hit innings his last time out. AAA: Indianapolis (65-48) vs Scranton/WB (54-57) 7:05pm
Probable starter:  Kris Johnson (9-4, 2.44)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 3, Scranton/WB 1

Kris Johnson will make his 18th start of the season. He has also pitched five times in relief. As a starter, he is 9-3, 2.17 in 103.2 innings, with 71 strikeouts, a 1.79 GO/AO ratio and a .221 BAA. He has made eight straight quality starts, allowing a total of nine runs in 53 innings(1.53 ERA) during those starts. At home this season, he is 3-2, 2.06 in seven starts and four relief outings. In his last game, he gave up one run over season innings.

AA: Altoona (51-57) vs Binghamton (67-42) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Eliecer Navarro (3-4, 4.50)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 3, Binghamton 2

Eliecer Navarro will make his ninth start for Altoona tonight. Before joining the Curve, he made 11 starts and two relief appearances for Bradenton, going 1-9, 2.86 in 69.1 innings. On the season, he has pitched a total of 113.1 innings, giving up 104 hits, ten homers and 29 walks. He has 86 strikeouts, an 0.74 GO/AO ratio and a .237 BAA. In his last start, Navarro went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. He has recorded just one strikeout in his last two games combined.

High-A: Bradenton (41-65 overall, 15-23 2nd half) vs Dunedin (50-52) 6:30pm 
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (4-7, 4.97)
Yesterday’s Result:  Bradenton 5, Dunedin 2

Zack Dodson will make his 16th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. On the year, he has thrown 83.1 innings, allowing 89 hits, ten homers and 30 walks. Dodson has 37 strikeouts, a 1.17 GO/AO ratio and a .266 BAA. In his last start, he went 6.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk. At home, he is 3-3, 4.96 in nine starts. Dodson has just 19 total strikeouts over his last ten games.

Low-A: West Virginia (59-47 overall, 22-14 2nd half) vs Lakewood (44-62) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Kyle Haynes (1-1, 2.36)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 4, Delmarva 3

Kyle Haynes will make his third start of the season tonight. He has pitched 33 times in relief this year. In his first start on 7/15, he went three innings, giving up one unearned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out seven batters in that game. In his last start on Saturday, he threw 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits, two walks and he struck out five batters. Haynes hasn’t given up an earned run in his last six appearances, covering 12 innings.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (26-15) vs Staten Island (18-24) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Cody Dickson (1-0, 3.09)

Cody Dickson will make his eighth start of the season. He has pitched a total of 23.1 innings, allowing 15 hits, one homer and 11 walks. He has 28 strikeouts, an 0.76 GO/AO ratio and a .188 BAA. In his last start, he threw five no-hit innings. Dickson issued one walk and faced the minimum. In his previous outing, he threw four shutout innings. He struck out a season-high six batters in his pro debut, when he threw three no-hit innings.

Rookie:  GCL Pirates (17-18) vs GCL Astros (17-16) 12:00pm
Probable Starter: Blake Taylor (0-1, 1.13)
Yesterday’s Result: Astros 18, Pirates 6 in 5 innings

Blake Taylor will make his fourth pro start today. He has pitched eight innings, giving up just two hits, two walks and one run, while striking out four batters. Taylor was the Pirates second round draft pick this year.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
