In Winter League action last night, Starling Marte had a rough game, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. In his previous three games combined, Marte has a total of seven hits and eight RBI’s.
Alen Hanson had his second straight pinch-running appearance. He was immediately erased on a caught stealing. Hanson was playing in his seventh game of the DWL season.
Anderson Hernandez reached base five times yesterday. He went 3-for-5, with three singles, two walks and two runs scored. Hernandez also drove in one run and stole his second base of the season. He now has an eight game hitting streak, with four straight multi-hit games.
Felix Pie went 1-for-2, with two walks and a run scored. He has now drawn 23 walks in 33 games.
In Puerto Rico, Benji Gonzalez was used as a pinch-runner last night. Just like with Hanson, Gonzalez was making his second straight pinch-running appearance.
In Mexico, Ali Solis went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s.
In Venezuela, Ramon Cabrera went 1-for-3, with a double and an RBI.
Luis Sanz made his first appearance since signing with the Pirates. He pitched one scoreless inning, allowing two hits and he recorded a strikeout. It was just the second off-season outing for Sanz, who last pitched on October 20th.
In Australian League ball from today, sixteen-year-old Sam Kennelly of the Perth Heat, went 1-for-3 in the second game of his team’s doubleheader. He is the only Pirates’ farmhand, not on the Adelaide Bite. Kennelly was signed as a shortstop, but he has been playing third base in the ABL.
Adelaide played a doubleheader, winning game one 7-6, before dropping the night cap by a 6-3 score. Game one went seven innings, while game two was the standard nine innings.
In the opener, Stefan Welch, Justin Howard and Dylan Child were all in the starting lineup. Welch went 0-for-3, with a walk and two runs scored. Howard broke a 5-5 tie with two out two-run homer in the top of the seventh. It was his first home run of the ABL season. He finished the game 1-for-4 with three RBI’s. Child went 2-for-4, with two singles, raising his average to .208 through seven games.
In game two, Zac Fuesser threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks. He struck out six and recorded nine groundball outs. Fuesser threw 90 pitches, 61 for strikes. It was the second time he has thrown six shutout innings(out of four total starts) and he has now given up just eight hits in his last 17.1 innings pitched. Fuesser was unable to pick up the win, as reliever Darren Fidge came in and immediately gave up six runs without getting out of the seventh inning. Fidge was relieved by Rinku Singh, who threw 1.1 scoreless innings of his own. Singh gave up two hits and struck out one, allowing both inherited runners to score in the seventh.
Stefan Welch went 1-for-4 in game two, driving in one run. Justin Howard had a tough night cap, going 0-for-4, with three strikeouts. For Howard, he is now hitting .136 through 44 AB’s, although he has drawn ten walks in his 13 games.
