Minor League Schedule: 7/9/12

Indianapolis is on their All-Star break. They resume their schedule on Thursday. Starling Marte, Rudy Owens and Jordy Mercer will represent the International League in the AAA All-Star game. Altoona plays an early afternoon game today before going on their All-Star break. West Virginia is off today. The GCL Pirates and both DSL teams were off yesterday. Creasy will be the first State College pitcher to make five starts

Probable starter: All-Star break

Indianapolis is currently on their All-Star break. They are in first place in their division with an 11 game lead over Columbus. Team batting leaders: Jeff Clement .299 average 13 homers. Starling Marte 52 RBI’s 55 runs scored. Chase d’Arnaud 23 steals. Pitching leaders:  Rick VandenHurk 8 wins. Bryan Morris 2.50 ERA(min. 50 IP) 1.09 WHIP. Justin Wilson 99 strikeouts.

Double-A: Altoona (42-45) VS Binghamton (41-46) 12:00pm
Probable starter: Phil Irwin (1-6 4.18)

Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 9 Binghamton 10

Phil Irwin will make his 11th start for Altoona today. He has also made one rehab start for Bradenton and pitched once in relief. Irwin has pitched a total of 60.1 inning for Altoona, allowing 69 hits, seven homers and nine walks with 48 strikeouts and a 1.97 GO/AO ratio. In his last start on 7/4, Phil went seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts. In was his second straight start in which he allowed one run over seven innings with no walks. At home this year, Irwin has an 0-4 5.10 record in 30 innings.

High-A: Bradenton (40-48 overall 11-7 2nd half) vs St Lucie (57-29 overall 8-10 2nd half) 5:00pm
Probable starter: Casey Sadler (1-3 3.06)

Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 3 St Lucie 9

Casey Sadler will make his seventh start of the year and his fifth straight appearance as a starter. He has also made 15 relief appearances this year. In his last start, Casey went seven innings for the first time in his career, allowing no runs. He threw six shutout innings against St Lucie on 6/20, giving up just two hits. Sadler has pitched a total of 67.2 innings this season, surrendering 64 hits, just one homer, 13 walks and he has 52 strikeouts and a 1.32 GO/AO ratio.

Low-A: West Virginia (32-56 overall 9-9 2nd half) @ Rome (30-58 overall 12-6 2nd half) 7:00pm 7/10
Probable starter: Zack Von Rosenberg (2-2 4.75)

West Virginia has off today. They resume their schedule with a four game series in Rome tomorrow. Zack Von Rosenberg will make his seventh start on Tuesday. He has pitched a total of 30.1 innings, allowing 34 hits, four homers, eight walks and he has 23 strikeouts. In his last start, Zack allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.

Short Season A: State College (11-10) @ Vermont (13-8) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Jason Creasy (0-1 5.06)

Jason Creasy will make his fifth start of the season tonight. He has pitched 16 innings, giving up 16 hits, two homers, six walks and he has 13 strikeouts. In his last start, Jason went five innings for the first time, giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. He was an eighth round draft pick in 2011, making his pro debut in the GCL last year, where he made three appearances, pitching a total of 5.1 innings with a 1.69 ERA.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
