Minor League Schedule: 6/5/12

Zack Von Rosenberg has rejoined the West Virginia rotation after spending the first part of the year in Extended Spring Training. Coming into the season, he was ranked 16th overall in the Pirates Prospects 2012 Prospect Guide.  In Indianapolis tonight, Justin Wilson will face-off against Daisuke Matsuzaka, who carries a record of 0-2 3.33 into the game. Probable starter: Justin Wilson (4-3 3.59)

Justin Wilson will get his 12th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 57.2 innings, allowing 42 hits, 29 walks and has recorded 57 strikeouts, tops on the team. Justin has held opposing batters to a .204 average, which includes a .162 BAA from left-handed hitters. In his last start, he allowed three runs over 5.2 innings, giving up four hits, three walks and striking out six. On the road this year, Wilson is 2-2 4.55 in six starts, covering 31.2 innings. He went 2-0 4.23 in six May starts.

Double-A: Altoona (25-29) @ Reading (30-23) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Shairon Martis (3-1 3.60)

Shairon Martis will make his fifth start this season. He also made four early season relief appearances for Indianapolis and three more for Altoona. In his starts, he has a 3-1 3.52 record with 23 innings pitched. In his last start on 5/30, Martis took his first loss of the season, going six innings, with five runs allowed on five hits and two walks. Two starts earlier, he allowed one earned run on one hit(a solo home run) over six innings pitched.

High-A: Bradenton (25-32) @ Daytona (24-31) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Hunter Strickland (2-2 3.06)

Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 14 Brevard County 7

Hunter Strickland will make his ninth start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 35.1 innings, allowing 41 hits, six walks and he has recorded 17 strikeouts. In his last start on 5/31, Hunter allowed just one unearned run on seven hits over six innings. On the road this season, he has a 1-2 6.08 record in 13.1 innings over three starts. At home he has a 1.23 ERA in five starts. Strickland had a 2.08 ERA in April, 3.63 in May.

Low-A: West Virginia (19-39) VS Delmarva (22-35) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zack Von Rosenberg (2012 debut)

Zack Von Rosenberg will make his first start of the season tonight. He has been in extended Spring Training up until now working on his fastball command down in the zone. Zack pitched all last season for West Virginia, going 5-9 5.73 in 25 starts and two relief appearances. In 125.2 innings, he gave up 143 hits, 19 homers, just 23 walks and he struck out a team high of 114 batters.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
