2012 Pirates Draft Prospects Rundown: 2/20

The first weekend of the 2012 NCAA Division I season is in the books, giving us our first look at some of the top 2012 draft prospects. A few of the top guys got off to great starts, with the top performer being Victor Roache.

Roache went 4-for-10 at the plate in his opening weekend, homering twice. The outfielder hit a Division I leading 30 home runs in 2011, and started his 2012 season off on a similar note, hitting one home run each in his second and third game of the year. He also drew three walks and was hit by a pitch, giving him a .571 OBP to start the year.

The top starting pitchers didn’t disappoint. Mark Appel, Chris Beck, and Kevin Glausman all got their first wins of the year, with all three pitchers going six or more innings with one earned run allowed. Appel was the only pitcher to go seven innings, giving up just two hits, two walks, and striking out five. He’s the number one prospect in the draft, and is unlikely to fall to the Pirates. Beck and Glausman could still be on the board when the Pirates pick eighth.

Deven Marrero and Mike Zunino didn’t get off to the best starts. Marrero went 3-for-11 in his opening weekend. Zunino had a better result, going 5-for-13, although he struck out four times. Both hitters are considered top five prospects in the draft.

Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.

typo in the Beck line? must be a 1-0 loss if he gave up a run.

Nate

Too bad position players are hard to come by in this years draft.  Would be wonderful if Roache or Marrero fell to us.  Don’t say it can’t happen…Rendon anyone?

Ross

and then after the top 5 i named, its a mixture of a bunch of guys in Beck, Gausmann, Roache, Correa, Trey Williams, Fried, Buxton that i have seen floated around at different spots ranging from 6 to 12

Ross

roache isnt rated as a top 5 pick right now unlike Marrero. if im not mistaken, the top 5 guys as of right now are Appel, Giolito, Marrero, McCullers, Zunino
