Winter League Playoffs 1/9 — Hernandez And Moss Homer

Published:

Only the Dominican League and the Venezuelan League had playoff games on Monday, with just a few Pirates’ players and friends involved:

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Caribes de Anzoategui  16,  Tigres de Aragua  8

Seven Runs in the 7th inning gave Los Caribes the big win, as they posted 19 hits, while holding Los Tigres to just 5 hits.  Los Tigres scored one run in the 1st inning on a double and two ground outs.  They added 4 runs in the 7th on a grand slam that followed two walks and a hit batter.  In the 9th, Los Tigres led off with two singles and a walk.  C Raul Chavez’s ground out drove in one run, and LF Jorge Cortes doubled in two more runs.  CF Jonel Pacheco walked, but that was all Los Tigres could get, and they were overwhelmed by Los Caribes.  Two singles, a double, and a sacrifice fly gave Los Caribes 3 runs in the top of the 1st.  Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with Caribes in the third, though they brought in only one run, on an RBI ground out.  A single and a triple added a run in the 5th.  The big 7th inning began with two singles, a fly out, then a single and a 2-RBI double.  A 3-run homer was followed by a walk and a double.  CF Gorkys Hernandez brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, then two more singles made it a 7-run inning.  Hernandez increased Los Caribes’ total again in the top of the 9th, with a 2-run homer.  A single and a walk followed, then pinch-hitter Exicardo Cayones reached base on a fielding error, allowing another run to score.  An RBI single gave Los Caribes their fourth run of the inning.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Tigres del Licey  6,  Aguilas Cibaenas  1

Los Tigres took the early lead with 5 runs in the first 4 innings.  They began with 2 runs in the 2nd, when C Ronny Paulino singled, and a walk and a single loaded the bases.  Paulino scored on an RBI grounder, and another run scored on a throwing error.  Two walks, including one to Paulino, followed by an RBI single brought in a run in the 3rd.  Los Tigres loaded the bases again in the 4th, with two singles and a hit batter.  A wild pitch allowed one run to score, and a sacrifice fly plated the second run of the inning.  Los Aguilas got onto the scoreboard in the 7th inning, when RF Brandon Moss led off with a solo homer.  Los Tigres added another run in the bottom of the frame, when Paulino singled, and scored on two doubles.   Los Aguilas posted only 4 hits besides Moss’ homer — one was a single by 2B Pedro Ciriaco.
