Team USA Falls To Mexico

Published:

Mexico  3,  USA  2

Team USA fell just short in Saturday’s game against Mexico in the Pan Am tournament.  After three scoreless innings, the US scored a run in the top of the 4th, when RF Brett Carroll (Red Sox) bounced into a double play, scoring 2B Joe Thurston (Marlins) from third base.  Mexico answered with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning.  Mexico also scored a run in the 5th.  All three Mexican run came off USA starter Jeff Marquez (Yankees).  Marquez allowed the runs on 5 hits and a walk, with 3 strikeouts in 4.2 innings.  Team USA scored another run in the 7th inning on an RBI single by 3B Tommy Mendonca (Rangers).

SS Jordy Mercer went 0-for-4 in the game with two strikeouts.  Pirates’ Rogelio Noris, now on Team Mexico (which explains why he’s not been on the field for Los Venados de Mazatlan), went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Noris went 0-for 5 in Mexico’s 2-1 win over Panama on Wednesday and 0-for-2 with a walk against the Dominican on Thursday.

There are no scheduled tournament games on Sunday.  Round Two begins on Monday, with the US facing off against Cuba in the evening.
