The Mesa Solar Sox beat Salt River today by a score of 13-7, thanks to three home runs from two Pirates prospects. Robbie Grossman led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer, his second leadoff homer in as many nights, and his fourth homer of the AFL season. The home run put him tied for the league lead in homers. Grossman also singled, ending up 2-for-4 on the day with a homer, two RBIs, a walk, and two strikeouts.
Jarek Cunningham had a bigger day, going 3-for-5 at the plate, with two homers, and a triple. Cunningham’s first homer came in the third inning with no one on. His next homer came in the fifth inning with two on, bringing in three of his five RBIs on the day. He now has three homers on the year, one behind Grossman.
While the hitting prospects had a good day, the same couldn’t be said for the pitchers. Nathan Baker pitched an inning, allowing two runs on three hits, with a walk and a strikeout. Baker entered the outing with one earned run in 4.1 innings in his previous two appearances. Michael Colla had an even worse appearance, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings. Colla made three appearances heading in to today’s game, with no earned runs in 4.1 innings.
