The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed outfielder Ryan Ludwick on the 15-day disabled list today with mid-back muscle spasms. The move is retroactive August 23rd. As a corresponding move, they have also purchased the contract of left hander Aaron Thompson, who will make the start in today’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
I profiled Thompson earlier today. Odds are that he will be up for one start, and will be sent down after the game, likely for a position player, since Ludwick’s move to the disabled list creates an open spot. That spot could be filled by Alex Presley, who has been hitting well in a rehab appearance in AAA, and who would likely take over as the starter in the majors with Ludwick out. Chase d’Arnaud is also a possibility to get the call, as he’s in the same situation as Presley. The Pirates could also activate both, and demote Pedro Ciriaco and Aaron Thompson.
