According to Colin Dunlap, Garrett Olson has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Indianapolis. The Pirates claimed the left handed reliever in the middle of March, at a time when Joe Beimel was injured and expected to miss the start of the regular season. Beimel recently returned, and his addition to the roster forced the Pirates to waive Olson.
Olson will be eligible for minor league free agency after the season. With today’s additions to the Indianapolis bullpen, along with the demotion of Olson, you have to wonder if someone will be on the outside looking in. The Indianapolis bullpen currently includes Chris Leroux, Dan Meyer, Daniel Moskos, Justin Thomas, Cesar Valdez, Tony Watson, and Tim Wood. Jose Ascanio is at the level on rehab assignment, and the additions of Blaine Boyer and Brett Sinkbeil, plus Garrett Olson, give Indianapolis 11 options for the bullpen. The Pirates will need to create some space for these three new additions.
