Pirates Cut Four Pitching Prospects

Published:

Morris was one of four pitching prospects cut today.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made four cuts today, all of them pitching prospects.  The Pirates optioned Bryan Morris and Kyle McPherson to the minors, and cut Rudy Owens and Justin Wilson.  Morris was optioned to AAA, which means he might not return to Altoona like I thought.  McPherson was optioned to A-ball.  He will open the 2011 season in Bradenton.  No word yet on the assignments for Owens or Wilson.

There could be more cuts soon, perhaps after today’s split squad games.  I can’t imagine Jeff Locke lasting in Spring Training much longer with the other three 2010 Altoona pitchers getting cut today.

The Spring Training Tracker has been updated.  There are now 54 players remaining in camp.
