Pirates Make Jon Sandfort Signing Official

Published:

Last Friday we heard that Pittsburgh Pirates’ third round pick Jon Sandfort was going to sign this week. Today the Pittsburgh Pirates officially announced the move in a press release. Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that Sandfort agreed to a $462,900 bonus, which is the full slot value for the third round pick.

The signing is similar to second round pick Wyatt Mathisen. Sandfort is a top talent who probably would have gone in later rounds in previous drafts due to his commitment to Florida, but would have eventually signed for a similar amount. The right-handed pitcher, who can already hit 94 MPH with his fastball, was instead drafted in the third round, where the Pirates could give him that amount without going over-slot.

The Draft Pick Signing Tracker has been updated.
