Pirates Prospect Watch: Carlos Jimenez Throws Five Shutout Innings

Published:

Carlos Jimenez pitched five shutout innings for the Bradenton Marauders on Saturday night. The start extended a hot streak for the 22-year-old right-hander, who now has a 1.71 ERA in 26.1 innings since the start of July.

Jimenez has one of the best changeups in the system, and that was working for him on Saturday. He threw the pitch 22 times, getting nine whiffs on ten swings, with three called strikes, leading to a 55% called and swinging strike rate. His fastball sat 94.3 MPH, touching 96.1, and had two whiffs on 16 swings, with ten called strikes (34% CSW). He also threw 12 curveballs, getting one whiff and one called strike.

The biggest thing that has held Jimenez back is his control. He limits runs due to being difficult to hit. This was his third start in a row where he walked three batters in five innings or less. He has improved over the last six weeks, after walking over a batter an inning in the first two months of the season.

Jimenez has a 3.52 ERA in 61.1 innings this year, with 78 strikeouts and a .188 average against.
