Pirates Prospect Watch: Billy Cook is Making a Great First Impression

Published:

After being acquired at the trade deadline for RHP Patrick Reilly, super utility player Billy Cook was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis. His first game on Saturday led to two doubles and a stolen base. On Sunday, he took it a step further, going 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, and a stolen base.

Cook is now 5-for-9 with a homer, three doubles, and two steals in his first two games with Indianapolis. Before the trade, he had a .279/.372/.485 line in 304 plate appearances with Baltimore, after a brief appearance to start the year in Double-A.

What stands out about Cook’s progress this year isn’t the power and speed. He hit 20 homers and stole 30 bases last year at the Double-A level. What stands out is that his strikeout rate has been reduced this year, while seeing an increase in his walk rate.

His strikeout rate has gone from 31.8% in High-A in 2022, to 25% last year in Double-A, to 22.7% before the trade this year. He’s down to 20% with Indianapolis.

The walk rate has gone from 7.8% in High-A, to 8.4% in Double-A, to 11.2% in Triple-A this year. The entire time, his power has remained consistent. Cook is in his age-25 season, but he’s shown improvements year-after-year, and is carrying that over to the Pirates’ organization. He could be an option for the majors by the end of the year.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 10-8, despite the big game from Billy Cook.
