Pirates Prospect Watch: Mike Burrows Bounces Back

Published:

Mike Burrows allowed one run in four innings in his latest start for Indianapolis.

The outing represented a bounce-back for Burrows, who is returning this year from Tommy John surgery. Burrows has been back-and-forth with his outings during his return. He allowed two runs in 1.2 innings last time out. That followed five shutout innings. The start before that saw him give up four runs in 3.1 innings. And before that, he allowed one run in four innings.

It can be common for pitchers returning from Tommy John to have consistency issues in their return. The good thing for Burrows is that he keeps bouncing back with good outings.

On Wednesday, Burrows sat 94.3 MPH with his fastball, touching 95.7. The pitch wasn’t effective, with three whiffs and one called strike on 24 pitches, for a 17% called and swinging strike rate.

His secondary stuff was more effective. Burrows threw 18 changeups, getting eight whiffs on 14 swings, along with a called strike for a 50% CSW. He also had success with his 14 sliders, getting one whiff and three called strikes for a 29% CSW. He threw eight curveballs, which weren’t as effective.

Burrows could make the majors this year as a depth option if he gains consistency. He’s more likely to be an option in 2025, after his initial return from last year’s surgery.
