Pirates Discussion: Zach Thompson Looks to Continue Strong Run Against Braves

The Pirates have been on a four game losing streak, and look to break that this afternoon at 4:10 PM EST as they take on the Atlanta Braves.

Zach Thompson takes the mound, sporting a 4.60 ERA in 45 innings. He’s been solid over the last month, with a 2.05 ERA in 30.2 innings — and really only one bad start out of six in that stretch.

We’ll see if Thompson can get the Pirates back in the win column today. Lineups will be posted when they’re announced. Use the comments below to discuss the big league club.

LA notwithstanding, this is still a bad team. The difference between now and April is that there are a bunch of guys who figure to get better. There are also a bunch who don’t, with still more lurking on the IL. Which ones will BC choose?

RAS TN

This is and has been a team that is going to lose somewhere around 100 games, the only positive is the team is at least playing some of the youngsters, and maybe they can turn into more than AAAA players. Only TWT…

BTW next year is not going to be much different than the last few…

Just one more thing taking your SP out after only throwing 67 pitches thru 5 innings is bush league crap

It won’t take much to figure out whether his choices are right or wrong.

hoffmark83

Once again hard to get excited for any 9th inning comeback when 2 of our batters are our catcher & Castillo. Oh well, there’s always next year.

mikeschalke

Or tomorrow.

AdministrativeSky236

Well marcano is showing he is a keeper and reynolds might be turning it around. thompson needs to stay in but 5 IP with 2 ER is very solid. Yerry should earn high leverage innings. Not all is negative from today

docdon385

There are a lot of “potential” positives in this organization but the way the GM and manager are handling things makes you wonder whether that potential will ever be realized.

Wilbur Miller

True, but Shelton is still a dummy, which could undermine all the good stuff.

mikeschalke

That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said about him. Are you well today?

AdministrativeSky236

Plus suwinski with 2 walks! He had a much higher BB rate in the minors, if he can get that back with his power and defense, he will be very solid even if he only hits .250 or so

Wilbur Miller

Figures the only reliever who could get anybody out is the one Shelton is desperate not to use. Plus he took Thompson out too soon.

Encouraging!

mikeschalke

Yeah I agree he didn’t have that many pitches for sure.

hoffmark83

Time to move on from Stratton. Maybe put on the DL with some fake injury.

Wilbur Miller

Right now, Beede and Yerry are their two best relievers, apart from Bednar and Crowe. Unfortunately, the average Nepalese sherpa will figure that out months before Shelton does.

PiratePrimate

8 run inning? Yeah, sometimes the Pirates play like a slow pitch softball team.

hoffmark83

I thought they were a beer league slow pitch softball team. My bad.

1979andCounting

Welp back to PFP. If Underwood stretches for the throw we get the D.P. Changes the whole inning. Instead he’s just standing both feet on the bag.

AdministrativeSky236

I was thinking the same thing. Thompson should have stayed in, but if not then he needs to stretch for that ball so we turn 2. Then he stays in and gets the third out we are out of there

jon6er

“Ben Cherington is Encouraged by Derek Shelton’s In-Game Decisions”
The other teams GM’s are too!

jon6er

67 pitches with 43 strikes for Thompson after 5 and his last 4 innings were really good. I guess he isn’t stretched out yet.

Wilbur Miller

I’m starting to think we won the Stallings trade.

The Chavis trade . . . maybe not.

JimEastTennessee

Marcano. Again. Smart baseball.

jon6er

His backing up on the Heineman overthrow was a big play with the speed of Harris.

JimEastTennessee

Indeed, I thought it was in the corner.

JimEastTennessee

Is Reynolds finally getting untracked?
Marcano is pulling a Suwinski, forcing his way into not being forgotten. I love it!
Only so many slots, and if the man ahead of you is balling, you become trade bait…

docdon385

His bobble head night’s coming up. That has to mean something.

PiratePrimate

Marcano’s a keeper

jon6er

Do they really need guys who can hit and field….oh wait

jtkuch

Castillo seems to have graduated from the Kevin Newman school of weak grounders to short.

jon6er

If nothing else these young guys are fun to watch.

jon6er

The young guys striking out… no so much fun🙄

patrick_kelly

Rather the young guys k’ing instead of guys like Yoshi and Jake.

Wilbur Miller

Just watched Suwinski’s catch. A 20?

jon6er

Marcano flashing the leather again, lol.

AdministrativeSky236

3 very hard hit balls so far…

1979andCounting

So here we are just 6 days after being on a “high” with a 5 – 1 record vs Dodgers and Dbacks. Six days later and we have given up 100% of those gains going 0 – 4. Admittedly knew it was going to be a roller coaster with these young Bucs. And we seem to face a new ace or a veteran ace every game. Smh, when do we face a #5 ?

PiratePrimate

Suwinski’s 6th? This shit I’ve been using has sure confused my thinking. But that makes everything even worse so I’ll have to use a little more. Damn you, Shelton.

PiratePrimate

Now, I’m pissed off. Suwinski 5th and Vogelfett batting 3rd? Shelton is silly. That’s just silly.

AdministrativeSky236

Vogeys 4th! I dunno if thats any better though

PirateRican21

The Swaggerty call up is looking very confusing, was hot, gets call up and doesn’t get consistent playing time…..

b mcferren

Diego Castillo needs a break in Indianapolis to work on some things

PiratePrimate

Diego needs his Spring Training swing

jon6er

‘Haines’ regression training

AdministrativeSky236

Lineup looks pretty good today imo, im ready to get hurt again

skliesen

It’s June 11th and Pirates RBI leader with 20 is Hayes. That’s lead off hitter, Hayes, for those of you not keeping score at home.

Time to bring up Bae, bat him first, and move Hayes and Reynolds down in order. I’d probably even put Suwinski 3rd and Reynolds 4th.

Definitely time to shake things up DS/BC. Probably well past time.

docdon385

I know the argument, Martin strikes out too much to be in Pittsburgh and yes, he has struck out 80 times already and has a .218 BA, BUT (notice the big but) he also has 11 HR and 41 RBI. When he hits it; he hits it hard and gets results.

Bae has 28 RBI and Cruz 30 while Reynolds, Voglebach and Chang (had to throw him in there but everyone knows he has a big fat 0) have a total of 28 between them. Oops, Reynolds just got another one as I type, so 29, that’s something I guess.

Cruz has been hitting .327 with 6 homers since May 22nd but has made a few errors in the field so I suppose those cancel anything positive he’s done at the plate, or so it seems anyway.

Not making any suggestions nor further comments. Just saying while watching Vogie strike out again with a runner on second. Martin could have done that or just maybe slightly better but who knows or ever will apparently.

AdministrativeSky236

Bae hayes reynolds chavis suwinski would be my order

PiratePrimate

Take Chavis out of that lineup and insert Cruz

mpg43952

Starters haven’t been bad during this bad stretch, need to get some professional at bats together.
