AFL Recap: Oneil Cruz Returns to the Lineup

Published:

On Tuesday night in the Arizona Fall League, the Peoria Javelinas took on the Scottsdale Scorpions. All three position players for the Pittsburgh Pirates were in the lineup and Blake Cederlind came out of the bullpen. The Javelinas moved to 9-7 on the season with a 3-2 victory.

Oneil Cruz started at shortstop for the first time since he left last Tuesday’s game early with an apparent injury that occurred while covering second base on a caught stealing. Cruz batted seventh and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He left for a defensive replacement after five innings, which appeared to be a scheduled removal. He’s 5-for-30 with five singles and two walks in nine games.

Here’s a batting practice video from Mike Rosenbaum, who works for MLB Pipeline:

Jared Oliva batted fourth and started in right field. He went 1-for-4 with his seventh double and a run scored. He’s now hitting .409, with an 1.141 OPS. Oliva was named to Saturday’s Fall-Stars Game earlier in the day on Tuesday.

Jason Delay started behind the plate and batted ninth. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, leaving him 2-for-24 in seven games, with a double and a walk (.279 OPS).

Blake Cederlind came on in the sixth inning and pitched a scoreless frame, throwing 13 pitches, with eight going for strikes. He picked up a strikeout. Cederlind had a quick inning, though it wasn’t clean, with one hit and a plunked batter. He has given up one run over five innings this fall.

Here’s the boxscore.
