Tejeda was the only prep player drafted by the Pirates after round 4 in 2022 and only the third in the draft, as they went heavily for lower-upside college players, almost all of them pitchers. MLB.com ranked Tejeda 217th among draft prospects and Baseball America had him 372nd. He was a two-way player in high school, as a pitcher and a power-hitting first baseman. As a hitter, he has considerable raw power from both sides of the plate, but at 6’7″ his long swing leads to questions about his hit tool. Some scouts believe he wants to hit, but the Pirates announced him as a pitcher and have said that’s primarily where their interest lies. Scouts prefer Tejeda as a pitcher, as he throws in the low-90s and has reached as high as 97. He also has considerable projection remaining. He adds a slow curve or slider, and a change. Tejeda is committed to Florida, so the Pirates will have to go over slot to sign him.
