WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Cheng is a toolsy shortstop, with good hitting ability and speed, and a plus arm. He also has a little more power than you’d expect for his size. He has good hands and an adequate arm, and doesn’t make many errors. He may not, though, have the range for short.
2020 2021 Cheng was out at the beginning of the season after being hit in the face by a pitch in camp. He got into action a couple weeks into the season and had a strong debut. His approach at the plate is obviously very advanced and he has some power, although he doesn’t offer a great deal of projection. He also runs well. In the field, Cheng split his time evenly among second, third and short, and handled all three positions well. 2022 Cheng spent the full season at Bradenton, playing mostly at short. His hitting was up and down, with slumps in May and July. In August, he got blistering hot, batting 389/517/611. Cheng did an excellent job throughout of working the count, leading to a good BB:K ratio. He had trouble with LHPs, posting just a .550 OPS against them, compared to .856 against RHPs. He was second in the league in steals, while playing most of the season at age 20. Cheng will be in Greensboro in 2023. |
