Along with Osvaldo Gavilan and Luis Tejeda, Campana was one of the Pirates’ three biggest international signings in the 2018-19 signing period. He has grade 80 speed and projects to stay in center field. One question is whether he’ll add power.
2019 Campana was hurt at the start of the DSL season, but didn’t miss much time. He got off to a slow start, going 3-for-27 in his first seven games, but he batted .313 after that. The strikeouts could be a concern going forward. The Pirates played him in center most of the time and he did very well stealing bases. 2020 2021 The Pirates sent Campana to Bradenton to open the season, but after a good stretch from mid-May to early June, he collapsed at the plate. From June 6 through July 11, he went 8-for-79 (.101) with one extra-base hit. He walked a lot, but had a very difficult time picking up breaking balls and offspeed stuff. He went to the FCL in mid-July and hit fairly well there, although still with a lot of swing-and-miss. Campana split his time between center and right, showing his elite speed in the outfield and on the bases. 2022 Campana returned to Bradenton, playing semi-regularly in center, and made some progress, but not a great deal. He can be frustrating to watch, as he’s got considerable talent. He covers a lot of ground in the outfield and has a good arm. At the plate, he produces very good exit velocities and starting showing some power in 2022; he slugged .429 in July, August and September combined. He’s also willing to take a walk, and he’s a threat on the bases. But the swing-and-miss issues are keeping him from being a productive hitter. Campana is reaching up-or-out time. He has enough upside, though, that the Pirates are likely to keep trying. He won’t turn 21 until the beginning of the 2023 season, although he’s eligible for Rule 5 now. |
