WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Sharts got six starts into his junior season at Nevada when he had Tommy John surgery. The injury possibly contributed to serious control problems — 32 walks in 31.1 IP — and a drop in velocity from topping out at 95 mph to 89-92. He was considered an early round talent when he went to college, as the fastball has good movement and his curve was a potentially outstanding pitch. He also has a below average change. Even with the surgery, Baseball America rated him 373rd in the draft class, which is exactly where the Pirates selected him.
2021 The surgery kept Sharts out, as expected. 2022 Sharts went to the FCL to work his way back and had massive control problems. Apart from 27 walks in 11 innings, he hit two batters and threw ten wild pitches. Things got a little better over time. He walked 19 in his first six innings and eight in his last five, but it still obviously was a problem. Whether Sharts can join Bradenton next year or ends up back in the FCL will probably depend on the progress he makes with the strike zone during the off-season. |
