WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Diaz signed in the 2017-18 international signing period. He wasn’t a prominent signing.
2018 Diaz pitched in short relief in his debut. Control obviously was an issue. 2019 Still pitching in relief, Diaz made significant progress with his control, although it was still not strong. Opponents batted only .174 against him, with minimal power. 2020 2021 After missing 2020, along with most other minor leaguers, Diaz went back for a third year in the DSL. He continued to improve, allowing opponents a line of only 158/252/218. 2022 Diaz finally got to the FCL, making a dozen appearances in relief. The Pirates frequently used him to take over when the starter needed to come out early. Diaz was probably a bit more effective than his ERA implies, but he had a gopher ball problem. He gave up four home runs, one every three and a half innings. Diaz is already Rule 5 eligible. He’ll likely be relief depth somewhere at the lower levels. |
