WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Hernandez was 18 when he signed and was not a prominent signing. He’s small in stature for a catcher.
2019 Hernandez split the catching duties on one of the Pirates’ DSL affiliates with two other catchers. He didn’t hit much and showed no power at all, but he did throw out 53% of base stealers. 2020 2021 Hernandez was the most frequently used catcher on an FCL team that was loaded with catchers and also saw some time at first. He had a rough time at the plate, showing no power and striking out at an extremely high rate. He threw out 32% of base stealers. The Pirates sent him to Indianapolis briefly at the end of the year to provide depth, but he didn’t get into a game. 2022 Hernandez filled in briefly at three levels. Hernandez apparently will serve as an organizational catcher going forward. |
