Hunt was not listed in MLB.com’s top 250 draft prospects or Baseball America’s top 500, as the Pirates after their first pick in the draft appeared to focus entirely on players who wouldn’t be expensive to sign. Hunt was a reliever who didn’t get good results at Mississippi State. He made one appearance as a freshman, then had a 4.80 ERA in 15 innings as a sophomore. As a junior, he had a 7.46 ERA and 1.58 WHIP, although he did strike out 32 in 25.1 IP. In the MLB Draft League in summer 2022, Hunt did a lot better, with a 2.65 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 13.8 K/9 in four starts. He throws 93-94 mph and his out pitch is a slider, so he profiles as a reliever. Hunt played a little at short with Mississippi State but didn’t get any at-bats.
