WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
There’s not a lot of information on Franzua.  He signed with the Astros out of the Dominican back in 2010 and mostly struggled over three DSL seasons.  The Astros released him after the 2013 season and he was out of organized ball until 2018.  When he first signed, he threw in the upper-80s, occasionally reaching 90-91, with a good change.  He may be throwing a good deal harder now.  When Franzua returned, it was in Japan, where he had three good years and two injury-plagued ones.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2023.

2011
DSL:  0-6-0, 4.12 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 39.1 IP, 6.6 BB/9, 5.9 K/9

The Astros employed Franzua mostly as a starter in the DSL.  He wasn’t especially effective, walking more than he struck out.

2012
DSL:  0-0-0, 8.10 ERA, 3.23 WHIP, 13.1 IP, 20.9 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

Back in the DSL, Franzua really struggled as he couldn’t throw strikes.

2013
DSL:  1-3-0, 4.42 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 38.2 IP, 7.2 BB/9, 9.1 K/9

A third DSL season just got Franzua back to where he’d been in his first season.  The Astros released him afterward.

2014-17
DNP

Franzua didn’t appear in organized ball during these years.

2018
JAPAN:  6-5-1, 1.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 105.0 IP, 4.5 BB/9, 10.6 K/9

Franzua surfaced in Japan, pitching in relief.  He had a good season, with some control trouble but a high K rate.

2019
JAPAN:  8-6-0, 2.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 73.2 IP, 3.9 BB/9, 11.5 K/9

Franzua largely repeated the previous year while appearing in 69 games.  He improved his walk and K rates.

2020
JAPAN:  2-3-19, 2.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 55.0 IP, 2.8 BB/9, 10.1 K/9

In the pandemic year, Franzua had his best Japanese season.

2021
JAPAN:  1-2-0, 5.91 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 10.2 IP, 5.9 BB/9, 11.0 K/9

Franzua struggled while appearing in only 13 games, possibly the result of a knee injury.

2022
JAPAN:  1-0-0, 7.36 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, 11.0 IP, 5.7 BB/9, 8.2 K/9

Franzua again saw only limited action, possibly due to the knee problem.  He got into 11 games and struggled.

It’s hard to say where Franzua might be in relation to the different levels of US ball.  It’s going to be a while at least, though, before we find out because he opened the season on the 60-day injured list.
