| A college senior, Birdsong was mainly a reliever as a freshman, then the season was cut short in his sophomore year due to the pandemic. His junior season was lost entirely to Tommy John surgery. He returned as a starter for his senior year and had a 5.68 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He struck out 37 and walked 19 in 44.1 IP. He throws in the low-90s, with a slider and change.
2022 Birdsong made four relief appearances in the FCL, with middling results. Birdsong should be somewhere in class A in 2023. The Pirates’ track record with college pitching draftees isn’t good . . . in fact, it’s awful . . . so Birdsong will be trying to buck the trend.
