WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Yean was a projectable, 180-pound pitcher when the Nationals signed him.  He later beefed up to a muscular build and now throws in the mid-90s, with the possibility of more velocity.  He has a slider that could become above-average and a developing change.  He came to the Pirates in the Josh Bell trade.

2018
DSL:  1-2-0, 5.98 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, 43.2 IP, 4.7 BB/9, 6.6 K/9

Yean worked mostly as a starter in his debut.  He struggled, with opponents batting .322 against him.

2019
R:  1-2-0, 3.82 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 35.1 IP, 3.1 BB/9, 9.2 K/9
A-:  1-1-0, 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 11.0 IP, 4.1 BB/9, 5.7 K/9

Yean made eight starts in the GCL and two in the New York-Penn League.  Baseball America ranked him 12th in the Nationals’ system after the season.

2020
DNP

Yean didn’t pitch in any minor league game, of course, but was impressive in fall instructs.  After the season BA ranked him 8th in a very weak system.  The Pirates acquired him on Christmas Eve.

2021
A:  5-2-1, 5.27 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 66.2 IP, 5.3 BB/9, 9.3 K/9

Yean had a disappointing season.  He started off in the Bradenton rotation, but struggled much of the time and pitched mainly in relief in the middle part of the season.  He made a few starts late in the year.  Control was often a problem, but he also got hit hard at times.  He didn’t show the kind of dominating stuff that was expected; although he fanned over a batter an inning, his K rate was actually well below the league average.

2022
A+:  3-4-3, 6.75 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 63.1 IP, 4.9 BB/9, 10.1 K/9

At Greensboro, Yean got considerably worse.  He went from high walk and K rates to high walk and K rates plus getting hit hard.  Opponents batted .293 against him.  He saved his worst month for August, so it’s not like he improved over the course of the season.

Yean’s end of the Bell trade obviously isn’t holding up well.
