WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Shockley played for NAIA Rio Grande for four years, although he missed nearly all of his sophomore season, apparently with an injury.  He put up big numbers in a good hitting environment, batting 381/484/575 as a junior, which got him conference player of the year honors.  As a senior he hit 373/495/574.  In both years he walked more than he struck out.  He was out of eligibility and signed a couple weeks after the draft.

2019
R:  183/253/207, 82 AB, 2 2B, 6 BB, 28 K, 1-1 SB

Shockley split the catching duties in the GCL with Daniel Angulo.  Shockley threw out 27% of base stealers.  He didn’t hit at all and had serious problems making contact, despite the fact that he was facing younger competition.

The Pirates have had to shore up their lower-level catching with college catchers who, in most cases, don’t figure to be prospects.  This is because they’ve seldom drafted prep catchers and haven’t been able to sign and develop catchers on the international front.
