WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Mendoza is a tall, lean pitcher who’s all about projectability. He currently throws in the low-90s, with a promising curve and change. The Pirates acquired him from Cleveland with two other players for Jordan Luplow and Max Moroff.
2017 Mendoza made only a brief debut after signing. 2018 The Indians sent Mendoza back to rookie ball, where he pitched both as a starter and in relief. He did decently, with some control issues. 2019 Mendoza pitched out of the Bristol rotation. He had control issues and gave up six home runs, all of them in July over the course of just 16.2 IP. 2020 2021 At the start of the season, Mendoza was out with an unknown injury. He didn’t appear until late in the year, when he made three rehab appearances in the FCL. 2022 Mendoza opened the season with Bradenton, pitching in short relief. That was probably a reaction to all the injuries. He had little trouble there, with opponents batting .134 against him. Mendoza moved up to Greensboro in mid-July, but after four rough outings he went out with an injury. He returned six weeks later to make one appearance. Mendoza finally stayed healthy for most of a year in 2022. He’ll be eligible for free agency after the 2023 season. |
