WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Mendoza is a tall, lean pitcher who’s all about projectability.  He currently throws in the low-90s, with a promising curve and change.  The Pirates acquired him from Cleveland with two other players for Jordan Luplow and Max Moroff.

2017
R:  0-0-0, 6.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP, 3.0 IP, 6.0 BB/9, 6.0 K/9

Mendoza made only a brief debut after signing.

2018
R:  2-2-0, 4.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 37.1 IP, 4.8 BB/9, 8.9 K/9

The Indians sent Mendoza back to rookie ball, where he pitched both as a starter and in relief.  He did decently, with some control issues.

2019
R+:  0-2-0, 5.82 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 43.1 IP, 5.8 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

Mendoza pitched out of the Bristol rotation.  He had control issues and gave up six home runs, all of them in July over the course of just 16.2 IP.

2021
R:  1-0-0, 7.36 ERA, 1.91 WHIP, 3.2 IP, 4.9 BB/9, 14.7 K/9

At the start of the season, Mendoza was out with an unknown injury.  He didn’t appear until late in the year, when he made three rehab appearances in the FCL.

2022
A:  5-2-3, 1.23 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 29.1 IP, 4.6 BB/9, 11.4 K/9
A+:  0-1-0, 14.54 ERA, 2.54 WHIP, 4.1 IP, 4.2 BB/9, 18.7 K/9

Mendoza opened the season with Bradenton, pitching in short relief.  That was probably a reaction to all the injuries.  He had little trouble there, with opponents batting .134 against him.  Mendoza moved up to Greensboro in mid-July, but after four rough outings he went out with an injury.  He returned six weeks later to make one appearance.

Mendoza finally stayed healthy for most of a year in 2022.  He’ll be eligible for free agency after the 2023 season.
