WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates signed Rivero as an outfielder with enough speed to play center and an outstanding arm. His bonus wasn’t known, as bonus amounts for Venezuelan players are being kept confidential for safety reasons. As a pro he had a contact oriented approach at the plate, but didn’t hit for much power. He has an outstanding arm, probably the best among outfielders in the system. In fact, the Pirates decided to move him to the mound, as he wasn’t making enough progress as a hitter. Given his outfield arm, they expected him to throw hard but he turned out to be more of a finesse pitcher.
2018 Rivero had a strong debut, hitting well with a very low K rate, albeit with little power. He started and finished strongly, with a weak month of July in between. Rivero played all of his games in center except for three in right. 2019 The Pirates jumped Rivero over the GCL to Bristol. It was a challenging assignment and he struggled badly for a while. He had a .461 OPS in June and .582 in July, but batted 315/367/411 in August and hit well in the playoffs. His plate discipline was solid throughout and the power started to show up a little in the last month. He obviously needs to work on is base stealing. Due to the logjam of outfielders at Bristol, Rivero wasn’t able to play every day, but he played center in just over half the team’s games and showed good range. Most of Bristol’s many outfielders had the ability to play center, so it says something about the Pirates’ assessment of Rivero that he was the primary center fielder. Rivero also recorded seven outfield assists, five from center and two from right. 2020 2021 The Pirates sent Rivero to the FCL when that league started play, but he moved up to Bradenton in mid-July due to injuries. He hit passably there, with excellent plate discipline but not much power. 2022 Rivero stayed in extended spring training while he made the move to pitching, then he joined the FCL team. He was generally effective pitching in one-inning stints, without dominating. Rivero will just turn 22 before the 2023 season, so it’s conceivable he could move up as a pitcher. He’ll have to wait until 2024, though, as he went on the full-season injured list at the end of spring training. |
