WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Miami made Scott the 13th pick in the 2018 draft.  He’s a tall outfielder with five-tool potential.  He has enough speed to play center at this point, but scouts think he’ll probably shift to right eventually.  Because he has a plus arm, that should work fine.  He didn’t do much at the plate in his first two seasons, but improved in 2021, with a strong last two months.  The Pirates acquired him in the Jacob Stallings trade.

After signing, Scott split his time between the Gulf Coast League and Low-A.  He played strictly in center at both stops and struggled to hit.  Baseball America ranked him sixth in the Marlins’ system after the season.

Scott spent most of the season in Low-A, where he just held his own at the plate.  He did, however, have a strong July, batting 313/382/434, which probably led Miami to promote him to the Florida State League for August.  He mostly struggled there.  LHPs were a problem, as he managed just a .582 OPS against them on the season.  Scott continued to play center exclusively except for one game.  BA ranked him 10th in the system after the season.

Scott had a moderately good season in High-A, with his power starting to show up in games.  He finished strongly after tough months in June and July, with an .875 OPS in August and .954 in 13 September games.  This time he had a huge reverse platoon split, posting a 1.008 OPS against LHPs and .717 against RHPs.  Scott played all three outfield positions, more often right than the others.

2022

At Altoona, Scott wasn’t able to build on his 2021 season.  Instead, he had largely the same season as he’d had in 2019.  What production he provided came mostly at the beginning and end of the season.  He had a huge month of April and a fairly solid month of September.  Scott had a mild platoon split.  One encouraging sign was that his power, including six of his seven home runs, came in the season’s second half.  In the field, Scott started 32 games in center, 58 in right and 13 in left.

Scott took a small step backward in 2022.  He’s eligible for Rule 5, but there wasn’t much reason to add him to the roster.  He’ll head back to Altoona in 2023.
