WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Finol was a low-profile signing by the Reds out of Venezuela.  He seems to have settled in quickly as a utility infielder.  At second, at least, he’s been a reliable defender.  He hit for average his first two years, which got him to full season ball relatively quickly.  He hasn’t shown any power or speed, though, and struggled when he got to full season ball.  The Pirates acquired him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

2017
DSL:  300/380/405, 200 AB, 10 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 23 BB, 19 K, 6-10 SB

In his debut, Finol spent the bulk of his time at third, but also played some at second and first.  He hit for average with some power and very good plate discipline.

2018
R+:  294/330/333, 177 AB, 7 2B, 9 BB, 32 K, 1-2 SB

The Reds moved Finol aggressively to advanced rookie ball and he again hit for average, but he didn’t show any power and his walk and K rates worsened sharply.  He split his time between second, third and short.

2019
R+:  226/212/323, 31 AB, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 K
A:  218/286/307, 179 AB, 5 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 13 BB, 33 K, 0-3 SB

Finol started the season in low A, but in late April the Cubs sent him back to extended spring training.  He went to advanced rookie ball in June and moved back up to low A in July.  His hitting fell of quite a bit.  He again played second, third and short, most often second.

2020
DNP

Finol didn’t play during the pandemic season and, afterward, the Pirates selected him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

2021
R:  276/348/466, 58 AB, 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 BB, 16 K, 1-1 SB
A:  176/300/176, 17 AB, 2 BB, 2 K, 1-2 SB
A+:  067/222/067, 15 AB, 3 BB, 6 K
AA:  000/000/000, 2 AB, 2 K

Finol played at four different levels, although he spent most of his time in the FCL.  His role seems to have been providing a veteran presence, as well as a utility player who could be assigned anywhere a need arose.  He played mostly first and third, with a little time at second and short.  He supposedly caught twice in the FCL, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was an error in the box scores.

2022
A+:  196/241/275, 51 AB, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 BB, 9 K, 1-1 SB
AA:  044/154/044, 23 AB, 3 BB, 6 K

Finol filled in briefly at Greensboro and Altoona.

Finol has one more year before minor league free agency.
