WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
The Pirates signed Jimenez shortly after the 2018-19 signing period began.  They had to wait a couple weeks until he turned 16.  Jimenez has very good stuff with a chance for three above-average pitches.  He throws a fastball that averages a little over 93 mph, along with a curve and change.  The change is his best pitch and he throws it often to both left- and right-handed batters.  The curve is also potentially a plus pitch, but Jimenez’ command will need to improve.

2019
DSL:  1-0-0, 2.54 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 39.0 IP, 3.9 BB/9, 10.4 K/9

Jimenez made ten starts in his debut and, considering that he only turned 17 during the season, put up remarkable numbers.  He missed about a month between early July and early August.  He had no platoon split.

2020
DNP

Jimenez evidently was healthy, as the Pirates brought him to the fall instructional league in 2019.  Of course, there was no season in 2020.

2021
R:  3-2-0, 3.15 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 34.1 IP, 3.9 BB/9, 11.5 K/9

Jimenez pitched mostly as a starter in the FCL and had a good year.  He had a few bad outings at the beginning and end of the season, but often dominated, including a high K rate.  He held right-handed hitters to a .541 OPS while left-handed hitters still only managed .660.

2022
A:  1-7-0, 4.13 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 69.2 IP, 5.8 BB/9, 11.4 K/9

Pitching mostly in the Bradenton rotation, Jimenez continued to display some of the best stuff in the system.  Control obviously was a problem at times and he seemed to run out of steam after mid-season.  His ERA was 3.05 through the end of June, 5.72 after that.  Left-handed batters continued to be more of a problem, posting a .798 OPS against him.

Jimenez is now Rule 5 eligible, but he’s a long ways from the majors and the Pirates didn’t add him to the roster or lose him.  He’ll start his 2023 season with Greensboro, although he was a late arrival to spring training and was still getting stretched out when the season started.
