WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Bellomy didn’t join the rotation at Wright State until his senior year, but performed well when he did, going 9-3, 3.57 in 15 starts.  For reference, the team’s ERA was 4.31 and their opponents had a 7.92 mark.  Bellomy didn’t miss a lot of bats, striking out 74 in 95.2 IP, but he walked only 21.  His fastball sits in the low-90s, and he also throws a curve and change.  He pitched sparingly his first two years, then mostly in relief as a junior, with a 7.34 ERA.  As a senior, Bellomy signed a week after the draft.

2019
R+:  0-0-2, 0.82 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 11.0 IP, 0.8 BB/9, 13.9 K/9
A-:  1-1-2, 3.86 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 30.1 IP, 3.0 BB/9, 6.8 K/9

The Pirates initially sent Bellomy to Bristol, where he pitched in relief.  He dominated there and they moved him up to West Virginia, where he pitched in relief at first and then made five starts.  His strikeout rate dropped sharply as a starter, and opponents batted .280 against him as a starter and .233 in relief.  He was not a groundball pitcher in either role.

2021
A+:  9-2-2, 4.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 67.0 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 11.4 K/9
AAA:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 1.0 IP, 0.0 BB/9, 0.0 K/9

Bellomy pitched in relief for Greensboro; unlike the previous front office, the Pirates’ current one seems to try putting players in roles that work for them, rather than fitting them into some pre-existing mold.  Despite the ERA, Bellomy pitched very well.  Opponents batted only 172/207/302 against him on the road.  At the home run ballpark in Greensboro, they hit 276/339/531.  He gave up nine home runs at home and four on the road.  He had a reverse platoon split.  Bellomy made one appearance for Indianapolis at the end of the season.

2022
AA:  1-2-1, 7.04 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 55.0 IP, 1.8 BB/9, 7.2 K/9

In Altoona, Bellomy had a very rough season.  Opponents batted .312 against him and homered nearly once every four innings, 13 longballs in all.  Only four came at home, so the ballpark in Altoona may have kept things from being a good deal worse.  His ERA was 4.09 at home and 11.45 on the road.

Bellomy needs a do-over in 2023.  He’ll pitch that season at age 26.
