The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Wyatt Toregas to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Toregas, a catcher, is the 22nd non-roster invitee for the Pirates, per the Spring Training tracker.
Toregas was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 24th round of the 2004 draft. He reached the majors for 51 at-bats in 2009, putting up a .176/.267/.196 line. In his minor league career, he has a .249/.310/.375 line in 413 at-bats at the AAA level, along with a .259/.327/.419 line in 668 at-bats at the AA level. Toregas isn’t likely to make the team out of Spring Training, and will likely be used as catching depth in the upper levels of the minors, fighting with Dusty Brown for a spot in AAA, backing up Jason Jaramillo.
