Rob Biertempfel of the Trib is reporting that Pittsburgh Pirates catching prospect Tony Sanchez broke his jaw over the off-season in a bar room fight. Biertempfel reports that the incident happened during the Florida Instructional Leagues.
Sanchez had his jaw broken in 2010 after being hit with a pitch in Bradenton. That required his jaw to be wired shut for three months. This injury wasn’t as serious, as Biertempfel reported that Sanchez appeared to be healthy a few weeks ago in mini-camp.
While the injury isn’t an issue, the questions will now turn to Sanchez’s judgment. Last year he had an incident on Twitter where he criticized a call made by an umpire. The incident earned him a short suspension from the team, and resulted in his Twitter account being shut down. As an isolated incident that just looked like a mistake, one that could easily be made when considering the nature of Twitter. However, this new incident won’t help convince people that the Twitter comments were a one time lapse in judgment.
