WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates signed Sosa as a potential power hitter who might be able to stay behind the plate. He has a good arm, but his receiving otherwise needs work.
2021 Sosa hit well enough in his debut, including solid plate discipline, but the power didn’t emerge. He played almost exclusively behind the plate, but threw out only 13% of base stealers and had ten passed balls in 27 games. 2022 Sosa went back to the DSL and had a big year on offense. The power started coming around and he had a remarkable BB:K ratio. He started only nine games at catcher, compared to 18 in the outfield corners, so the Pirates may be having doubts about his viability behind the plate. Sosa missed several weeks late in the season due to injury. If Sosa continues to develop with the bat, he won’t have to catch in order to move up as a prospect. |
