| Hofmann is a short right-hander who pitched for Colby CC before going to Northwestern. He only started four games as a junior before things got shut down. In 28 innings, he didn’t allow an earned run. He gave up 14 hits and five walks, and fanned 38. According to Baseball America, Hofmann had a fringy fastball that sat at 90-91, but that report may have been outdated as he was hitting 94 in 2020. He throws a power 12-to-6 curve, and has also added a slider and change. BA ranked him 478th among draft prospects, so he may have been overdrafted. Theoretically, the Pirates may have drafted him in order to save slot money to use on Jared Jones and Nick Garcia. In actuality, though, they spent more than $660,000 less than they could have without losing draft picks, so it appears they just wanted to save money. In any event, Hofmann signed for well below the slot amount of $402,000.
2020 2021 Hofmann pitched in long relief for Bradenton in the early part of the season, then moved to the rotation in mid-June. He was outstanding for the first two months, posting a 1.86 ERA in May and June. After that, it was 4.53. The primary problem was gopher balls; Hofmann gave up just one in his first 29 innings, then 11 in the next 53.2 IP. He seemed to wear down in September, with opponents posting an .844 OPS against him after being under .700 in every previous month. He was much more effective as a reliever, as opponents put up an OPS of .747 against him as a starter and .471 as a reliever. He had a reverse platoon split: left-handed batters had a .569 OPS against him and right-handed batters .722. 2022 The Pirates moved Hofmann to relief at Greensboro and he fell off a cliff, performance-wise. Thanks to a walk rate over a batter an inning, opponents got on base at a .434 clip. He got worse as the season went along. Many of the college pitchers drafted by the Pirates’ current front office have had great difficulty just handling A-ball. So far, the evidence suggests that this management team doesn’t do well at evaluating talent. |
