Pirates Sign Infielder Darnell Sweeney to a Minor League Deal

Published:

The Indianapolis Indians announced that 28-year-old infielder Darnell Sweeney has been signed as a minor league free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates and he will report to Indianapolis.

Sweeney has been a free agent since the end of 2018. He has played parts of two season in the majors, seeing time with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015 and the Toronto Blue Jays last year. In 39 Major League games, he has a .172/.294/.345 slash line. He has stolen 158 bases during his minor league career and has reached double digits in homers four times.

Indianapolis is down two infielders with injuries to Ke’Bryan Hayes and Pablo Reyes. Sweeney has seen plenty of time at second base, shortstop, third base and center field over the years, while also playing both corner outfield spots. The 2012 13th round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers will likely move around with Indianapolis as well, providing solid depth with big league experience.
