Prospect Watch: Rough Nights for Joe Musgrove and Dario Agrazal

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Colin Moran, Edgar Santana, Kyle Crick, Max Moroff and Dovydas Neverauskas), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our 2018 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis lost 12-3 to Durham in a rain-shortened game.

Joe Musgrove was nearly perfect his last time out for Indianapolis. The only runner in 5.2 innings was on an error. On Friday, he was far from perfect. In five innings, Durham put up six runs on ten hits and two walks. Musgrove was unable to get through any inning in order. He reached 96 pitches in five frames, one short of what the Pirates were hoping to get out of him. Assuming the Pirates don’t change their plans after this poor outing, his next start would be in the majors.

Casey Sadler came out for the seventh and allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks while recording just one out. Austin Coley, who was on the schedule as tomorrow’s starter, had to come out to finish the inning.

On offense, Kevin Newman had three singles, a run scored, an RBI and his seventh stolen base. He has a nine-game hitting streak. Christopher Bostick hit two doubles and drove in two runs. He has 11 doubles on the season. Pablo Reyes had a single and a double to give him a .333 average since joining Indianapolis last month. Wyatt Mathisen is hitting .500 in limited time after a 1-for-2 night. He also drew a walk.

Prospect-Watch-Altoona-Curve

Altoona lost 8-1 on Friday night.

Dario Agrazal came into this game with the second best ERA and second best WHIP in the Eastern League. Those numbers took a big hit in this game as Portland put up two runs in the first and another five in the third inning. Somehow Agrazal managed to finish off his night with three shutout innings to get Altoona through the sixth. On any other night, his no walks, five strikeouts and an 8:3 GO/AO ratio would make it a strong outing, but this was a tough game. His ERA went from 1.30 to 2.45 tonight.

Pedro Vasquez followed Agrazal and allowed one run on three hits over three innings. He had started in his first two outings this season.

Josh Harrison was the DH tonight after playing nine innings at second base last night. He batted four times and had a strikeout, RBI single, pop out to third base and a fly out to right field. In three games, he is 2-for-12 with a walk.

Christian Kelley left for a pinch-runner early in this game after running out a two-base error. No word on his injury.

Jason Martin continued to make his push for a promotion, going 3-for-5 with his eighth double. He now has a .369 average. Elvis Escobar hit a pinch-hit triple. Will Craig and Jordan George each had RBI singles.

Prospect-Watch-Bradenton

Bradenton won 5-1 in 11 inning over Palm Beach.

Starter Cam Vieaux couldn’t get through five innings against this same Palm Beach team in his last start. On Friday night he cruised through seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks, while posting a 10:4 GO/AO ratio. It was his longest outing of the season and the second time he’s allowed 0-1 runs in a game this year. Jess Amedee tossed two shutout innings and struck out five batters. Scooter Hightower got the win with two shutout frames.

Bradenton took the lead in the top of the 11th after Palm Beach walked the bases full. With one out and Bligh Madris on third base, both Trae Arbet and Casey Hughston were intentionally walked. Those two are hitting .148 and .153 respectively this season. That brought up Jared Oliva, who has been hitting well for the last two weeks and he made them pay, clearing the bases with a double. Adrian Valerio would triple to bring home Oliva.

Oliva and Albert Baur each had two hits and a walk. Oliva also picked up his ninth steal. Baur has a .331 average through 33 games. Alfredo Reyes walked three times.

Prospect-Watch-WV-Power

West Virginia lost 6-0 to Lexington.

Sergio Cubilete made his comeback from a facial injury in his last start and threw one-hit ball over five shutout innings. In his second start back, he did not have a good night. Cubilete allowed five runs on six hits (two homers) a walk and a hit batter. He had six strikeouts and a 5:2 GO/AO ratio, so those are nice stats in an otherwise rough start.

Ike Schlabach followed Cubilete and tossed three shutout innings on one hit, no walks and three strikeouts. He now has a 2.84 ERA in 31.2 innings.

The offense had their chances to score despite just three hits all night. They also had four walks and a hit batter, but the Power went 0-or-12 with runners in scoring position, stranding all eight runners. Calvin Mitchell had two hits, including his tenth double. Oneil Cruz had the other hit.
